Hazleton Standard-Spanker, Saturday, Jun 30, 1962 19 City Teeners Speaking of Sport's Many Area Bowlers Do Well in Record-Setting Tourney at St. Joseph's "I I ft 4 1 etKA' 1 While some of the teams in the Greater Hazleton Jr. Legion League are drawing well, some of them aren't and it's surprising. It's excellent baseball that any bonafide baseball fans would enjoy. Most of the games have been close.
Hazleton, West Haz leton and Freeland all have good teams and Kelayres and Weath-erly both show good potential. Boys like Norb Dudeck and Mike Scarcella of Hazleton, Rollie Boyle of West Hazleton and Billy Loftus of Freeland are real tough pitchers with good control -and there are a few others who don't need much more to be top-notchers. o-o Tommy Matchlck played in the league last season and he's hitting .318 in pro ball this year (Class D). which Is an Indication of just how good the local league is. Fans should support Legion ball because by doing It they are giving a chance to many boys to catch the eye of a scout which may lead to a possible bonus contract.
No admission is charged at the games but a free-will collection is taken up. A Lansford sports writer is a bit confused about the proposed jointure involving Hazleton, Mc-Adoo and Kline Township. We quote: "The real benefactor in the jointure between Hazleton, McAdoo, Kline and Butler Townships will be the Mountaineers, who already stand pretty close to the top in the sport scene in the region. Plenty big for the schools Hazleton already plays, the jointure would mean 151 more senior school students, giving the Mountaineers some outstanding personnel to pick and field a winning unit. Of course the three smaller schools that make up the new-planned shift have not been turning out strong sports teams.

Butler Township has never had a high school of Its own.
Secondly, Kline Township has been sending its students to either McAdoo or Hazleton on a tuition basis for many years which kind of takes all of the steam out of that phrase about the smaller schools involv-ed not having had strong sports teams. They haven't bad ANY sports teams. That leaves McAdoo, and if the jointure goes through there's no doubt McAdoo athletes will be a big help to HIIS. McAdoo has always had good 'hletes but in recent years hasn't had enough of them. Penn State is one of the few colleges in the country that can boast a winnig football team during every season in the postwar era.
The Nittany Lions have avoided a losing season 23 straight years. They, last lost more than won in 1938 when their record was 3-4-1. The overall record for 23 winning seasons is 144 wins, 55 defeats, and nine ties. Penn State has made four bowl appearances in that span and was never a loser. The Lions tied Southern Methodist in the Cotton Bowl in 1948, 13 13; triumphed over Alabama and Georgia in the Liberty Bowl in successive and walloped Georgia Tech in the 1961 Gator Bowl.
No wonder those Penn State fans are so faithful. oo Bill Generose has two bus seats and two box seat tickets available for the Los Angeles-New York doubleheader tomorrow. Cozy Loft in 4th Triumph Cozy Loft, making it a runaway in the Hazleton Flying Club, won its second straight pigeon race and fourth of the season yesterday when "Pumpernickel" flew in on the 500-mile beam from Glendale, S.
at an average speed of 1053.09 yards per minute, best among HFC members. Only six "day" birds were clock ed in the Hazleton Club yesterday and Cozy had two of them, but even at that barely edged out run nerup Ed Rymsza for top honors. The win, although hoped-for, wasn't necessary to assure Cozy Loft of the average speed title in the 100 to 500-mile races. The three previous triumphs had just about sewed average speed up. All that was needed was a "day" bird and two of them made it home for the winners.
The Bugda Loft, which also logged in two day birds, took third place with an average speed of! 1032.88 yards-per-minute and John Bugda was fourth at 1014.28. Second-place Rymsza's bird flew at 1052.62 yards-per-minute less than a yard per minute behind Cozy's blue-check "Pumpernickel." It was Cozy's fourth triumph in 11 tries in the series of old bird races. The final race in the series will be held from Gretna, a 300-mue test, next week.
